History of Kingsley Plantation

The plantation house at Kingsley dates back to 1797–1798, making it the oldest of its kind in Florida. In 1814, it became the residence of Zephaniah Kingsley and his wife, Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley, a formerly enslaved woman from Senegal. Together, they managed the plantation under Spanish rule, which produced cotton, citrus, and other crops through the labor of enslaved workers.

The semi-circle of tabby concrete slave cabins constructed using oyster shells remains, some of the most significant and best-preserved in the United States. Archaeological discoveries, including artifacts and burial grounds, provide deep insight into the lives and traditions of enslaved Africans on the island.

Today, the site is preserved and managed by the National Park Service, offering tours, educational programs, and annual events like the Kingsley Heritage Celebration.
