MOCA was founded in 1924 as the Jacksonville Fine Arts Society, it is one of the oldest cultural institutions in the region. In 1948, it was incorporated as the Jacksonville Art Museum, and by 1978, it had moved into a new facility on Art Museum Drive.
In 1999, the museum relocated to its current home in the historic Western Union Telegraph Building in downtown Jacksonville. Following a major renovation, it reopened in 2003 as the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville (MOCA), focusing on 20th and 21st-century works.
